Ok, so 2 hours ago I was pissed for real, no laughing matter at all =___= here's how the bystander effect went down......
Went to Amanda's house, got changed and practiced dropping oranges until we got it good and convincing :D Went to Safeway and started testing it out outside...
THINGS THAT FAILED
1) A group of 10 people from our school were there to watch. And instead of watching inconspiciously, they STOOD RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE IN A HUGE GROUP. We told them to piss off, and then they got angry at us ("well now that you've talked to us, everyone's gunna know its an experiment!") and in turn, WE got angry at them because there was no reason for anyone to be angry at anyone...yeah get your head around that one hahahah
2) LEAH!!!! NEVER use someone who is shy/embarrassed to trip over!!!!!! We thought it would be funny cos she's the lanky kinda person, but EVERY time there was a PERFECT moment to trip (ie, a group of school guys walk over) she would simply walk normally and do nothing =__= MAN was I pissed off, we were taking FAR too long to do a simple experiment and I was hungry, tired and sick...I WANTED TO GO HOME :( We wanted to replace her with me halfway through the experiment, but we would have to start from the beginning again...though we ended up agreeing that starting again wouldn't take as long as continuing with Leah. I personally reckon its cos Victor and stuff were hanging around distracting her, cos they disappeared for a bit and Leah tripped twice while they were gone
3) People start disappearing after 5-6 o'clock - the point was to test the affect of people, and it made no sense cos there were no people anyway, and having a few extras made no difference
I would do it again properly some other time and use ME as a person to trip and drop oranges, cos I honestly don't give a crap about embarrassing myself in front of people I'll never see again - I embarrass myself in front of people I know on a daily basis so it doesn't make a difference :P but I really can't be stuffed because it's SO time consuming and there's so much room for error
Leah - you suck, but I love you :D now that the whole thing is over, I'm not as angry and it's quite funny to think about it :P
our results were:
0 bystanders - 1 caucasion female in her late 20's; 1 asian man in his 40's stole an orange (FORREAL LOL)
1 bystander - 2 teenagers, a boy and a girl
2 bystanders - 1 asian man in his 40's, 1 caucasian female in her 30's
3 bystanders - 2 caucasian females (20-40) and 1 african male (20's)
3 bystanders (this is meant to be 4 but psh) - 1 indian male, 1 indian female
xo

What an awesome experiment.
I'd hate to pick up all the oranges just to drop them again.
